Wimbledon Adopts Video Replay System in 2025.

The Championships court with video review system

Wimbledon will follow the US and Aussie Opens in implementing replay technology.

Replay technology are set to arrive at The Championships in the upcoming tournament.

Athletes will gain the right to contest specific calls made by the chair umpire, mirroring the system currently in operation at each of the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

This innovation is slated for use on the main stadium and Court One for the duration of the tournament and on the remaining featured courts when they are staging singles contests.

This step arrives only a year after the All England Club introduced electronic line calling, which terminated the longstanding role of line judges.

Reviewable Decisions

Players will not be permitted to challenge the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but they can request the umpire to review other decisions, such as:

  • If a ball has bounced twice.
  • Whether a ball made contact with an rival's racket or person during play.
  • Possible interference at the conclusion of a point.

Importantly, there will be an unlimited number on the number of reviews a player can request.

Practical Application

An illustrative case took place in Indian Wells last week, where a top player used the video challenge against his opponent.

Draper admitted it was a difficult call for the official, but believed his opponent had "played the rules effectively."

The umpire viewed a replay and determined Draper was responsible for hindrance, awarding the point to his opponent.

Wider Implementation

This technology are not exclusive to Grand Slams. It was adopted at the American major since 2023 and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by next season the men's ATP Tour will have video reviews in place at all of its events.

Further Updates

A further change at The Championships this year involves the addition of visual indicators on displays to support the audio calls from the ELC system.

This solves instances where fans have occasionally been uncertain if a shot was in or out.

In other news, with precisely 100 days remaining until the start of the tournament, organizers have further announced an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
