The Himalayan nation's Electoral Scene Sees Major Partnership Forged By Media Personality and Ex-Rapper Mayor

In a significant development ahead of next year's general election, two prominent personalities in Nepali politics have joined forces. This alliance comes in the wake of widespread and deadly young people's protests that rocked the country earlier this year and ultimately led to the removal of the incumbent government.

A Pledge to Address Young People's Concerns

Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have officially vowed to focus on the issues raised by the new generation. This commitment comes after the violent anti-graft protests that occurred in September, which resulted in considerable loss of life.

"Consensus should not be as the leader seeks, it should be what the country needs," stated Lamichhane after the agreement was signed.

The late summer revolt was triggered by widespread anger over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This action served as a spark for deeper resentment stemming from years of slow growth and persistent allegations of deep-rooted political corruption.

Details of the New Electoral Partnership

According to the formal agreement, the positions for the imminent election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the leader of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the party's nominee for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

• Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known fifty-one-year-old television personality, he founded the RSP in 2022, channeling widespread discontent with the country's older political class. He has in the past served in the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago freed on bail in a case involving reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
• Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a central figure in Nepal's current political transition. He played a role in setting up the caretaker government that took over after the previous administration was dissolved.

In a related development, the current interim prime minister recently held meetings with several leading political figures. These talks involved former prime ministers and the presidents of rival mainstream parties, marking the first such dialogue since the time of the protests.
