Balloons carrying thousands of packs of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was forced to close for hours when multiple of them entered the airspace of Lithuania.
The operational halt led to the cancellation of 30 flights impacting 6,000 passengers, with officials warning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
Officials confirmed that 25 meteorological balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two balloons ending up precisely above the aviation facility.
Up to 14 of the weather balloons deployed throughout the weekend passed through the Vilnius area, which is the location of Lithuania's main urban center and adjacent to the border with Belarus.
No fewer than 11 balloons carrying eighteen thousand packages of contraband smoking materials have now been retrieved, though additional discoveries are expected, according to law enforcement authorities.
While creating issues, authorities noted that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - Belarusian smoking products - are nothing new in neighboring countries."
So far this year, over five hundred weather devices have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were recorded last year.
At the same time, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which also borders Belarus, has documented over 100 cases in which smuggled items were delivered from its adjacent country employing the weather devices.
Regarding inquiries concerning why smugglers utilize a method that is highly susceptible to weather elements rather than simpler to operate drones, officials clarified that "Meteorological balloons are rudimentary tools used by illegal traders - they are less expensive than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Authorities continued that "The goal of law enforcement is to seize the largest possible amounts of illegal goods and to apprehend coordinators and participants so that this activity become not financially viable and do not pose risk to commercial air travel."
These airspace violations occur during an era marked by increased concerns in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have caused air traffic disruption across the region.
Recent incidents in adjacent nations have prompted European leaders to fast-track conversations about strengthening air defences throughout the region.
