An defence minister has stated that the Ministry of Defence is actively examining the possible threats posed by Chinese-made cars, while staff have been advised to refrain from talking about classified information in all vehicles.
During a recently aired appearance on a radio station, Luke Pollard addressed claims that MoD staff have been told not to talk about classified information while travelling in China-made vehicles.
The minister said that the MoD is “looking into” Chinese vehicles within its fleets, however stressed that security is a concern in all contemporary vehicles.
Our department has a collection of tens of thousands of vehicles in the MoD and those vehicles represent a very small number.
But whether you’re driving a Chinese car or a car from another country, what we’ve asked our staff is to avoid connecting Ministry of Defence devices into their car, not to have discussions at a secret classification in any kind of vehicle, because of the growing threats of eavesdropping that exist in every single automobile, to restrict those secret talks in protected areas. That’s a prudent and sensible thing for anyone worried about safety.
When it was put to him that it would be prudent for the MoD to stop using all Chinese vehicles, Pollard replied: ‘That’s precisely what we are looking into at the moment.”
This announcement follows claims from Scandinavian countries have warned the UK to the existence of dual-use shutdown mechanisms in Chinese-made electric buses, which could allow the Chinese government to disable public transport and bring chaos to public transit.
Additionally, a Russian spy ship has been shining laser beams at Royal Air Force pilots, labeled a “highly dangerous” act by defence officials.
The broader security environment highlights the significance of robust measures and caution in all areas of official operations, from vehicle usage to discussions habits.
